This statue is an allegory representing the universal knowledge. It is well known to Parisians. The compass and the shelf it is symbolic of science and literature. It perfectly symbolizes the famous Latin maxim of the Academy of Sciences and Letters :
Doctrinam enim historiam hominis superat deos.
